Remote work

Check an employer and recognise suspicious job offers

A familiar logo and polished website do not establish that an online job offer is genuine. Take time to check who is contacting you and what they want you to do before sharing information.

Contact the company independently

Note the company name, official site, advertised role and the person's responsibilities. Do not rely only on a link in their message: find an official contact separately and ask whether the person and vacancy belong to the company. A matching name or logo is not confirmation.

Signals to stop and check

An upfront fee for the promise of a job, or a request to pass someone else's money through your account, is a serious warning sign. The FTC also identifies these patterns in job scams. Do not pay before completing your checks, even if someone pressures you.

  • Never share SMS verification codes, card PINs or passwords.
  • Check requests to install unknown files or give remote access to your device.
  • Do not accept unexplained claims of unusually high pay for simple tasks without evidence.

Clarify the offer in writing

Ask for the legal business name, contacts, duties, schedule, pay calculation and payment date. Clarify whether test work will be used commercially and why personal details are requested. This guide is not a substitute for an individual legal review.

If something seems wrong, keep the messages and listing link and stop sharing information. If you have sent money or banking details, contact your bank promptly through its official channel. Report the specific circumstances through the platform's help section as well.

Your checklist

  • The vacancy is confirmed through an independent official contact.
  • Duties and payment terms are clear.
  • There is no request for upfront fees or transfers of other people's money.
  • Personal information is shared only for a clear, necessary purpose.
